Feed & Seed

The Platform Feeder
Platform type feeders are probably the simplest way to feed all the birds. They attract large and small species and and make viewing wonderfully easy. A good platform feeder should have adequate drainage. They can be placed on the ground, on a low pole, or on a higher pole baffled for squirrel protection. Almost any feed can be dispensed on a platform feeder.

Some ideas are: Sunflower for everyone; Nuts with or with out shells for jays and chickadees and titmice etc.; Millet for doves, and so on.

Typical Platform Feeder
The Wild Bird Centers have patented a product called MOBI MESH. This material, used as a screen in some of our platform feeders, gives you excellent drainage plus exceptional strength.

The Hopper Feeder
A Hopper Style Feeder is simply a platform with a seed reservoir. The same birds can use this kind of feeder that you may get to a platform but you will not have to fill it each day.
Sunflower or a mixture of Sunflower and Nuts works well in these feeders. If you want to control the squirrels, try Safflower.
We do NOT recommend HULLED SUNFLOWER. It gets pretty yucky in these feeders.

Covered Hopper Feeder
We carry feeders that not only look good but that work well too. Look for good drainage and a solid roof. And remember that you are going to need to fill it often, so bigger is not a bad idea. It may save you a few trips to the feeders. Your view of the birds may be a little tougher. But all in all, these are great feeders.

Tube Style Feeders
Tube Style Feeders are, in our opinion, the best way to dispense seed to the birds.
If you think you only want to have one feeder in your yard you may consider this style.
If the feeder is well made, it will keep your seed pretty dry and it will dispense it more slowly (i.e. one seed at a time instead of a trough of seed).
If you add a tray to the tube feeders they will accommodate all the birds that use feeders.
Sunflower seed (hulled or not) or a mixture of Sunflower and Nuts are perfect for these feeders.
If you want to discourage squirrels, consider Safflower.
