Binoculars
and Spotting Scopes
You may "try on" binoculars
from most manufacturers in our stores.
We will help you make the best choice
from among the following.
Binoculars
A couple of thoughts on binoculars.
First, always try before you buy.
Your eyes and your friends eyes may
be quite different, and the binoculars
they recommend may not work for you.
Try out a couple of different models
before making any purchase.
Second, don't necessarily go for power
.... stay between 7 and 10 power.
Anything more becomes unwieldly in
the field. Third, stay away from zoom
or perma-focus binoculars.
And last, please come in and talk
with us or at least give us a call.
This is an important decision. Do
your homework!

Power
The "power" or magnification
of a binocular refers to the number
of times the subject in view is enlarged.
With a 7x35 binocular, the first number
-- 7 -- refers to the power of the
model (magnifies 7 times). As you
increase the power from 7 to 8 to
10, you will see a larger image but
less background with a smaller field
of view. The second number -- 35 --
refers to the objective lens size
(35 mm. lens). Generally a larger
objective lens will produce a brighter,
more detailed image. The larger lens
will also make the binocular heavier.
Optics Accessories: You
may need some of these accessories.
Fixed length and zoom lenses for spotting
scopes
Tripods -- a must for the long lenses
Binocular and scope cases and chest
harnesses
Try them out at one of our stores.
Spotting Scopes
If your interest is identifying wading
birds, ducks, or other birds that
tend to be far off, but not terribly
fast moving, then a scope may be for
you. We offer many different makes
of scopes from Nikon, Swarovski, Leica
and Bausch and Lomb. In general, look
for a scope that lets in a lot of
light, and remember to get a sturdy
tripod!
